Tinman Podcast

I’m a former college soccer coach and avid music fan. Many episodes will have a hand in one or both of those topics, but we’ll also delve into entrepreneurship, leadership, and other subjects. Basically, this podcast is my way to reconnect with old friends, get new perspectives, and help others share their own stories, passions, and expertise.

Joe Tinius

Wednesday Oct 25, 2023

Wednesday Oct 25, 2023

This is a special episode because I get to chat with Joe Tinius, or as I call him, dad.  He had some unique influences in his life, was a high level athlete in college, and then spent 38 years in education as a teacher, administrator, and superintendent.  The first chapter provides the bookends as he shares his philosophy as an educator and early influences in his life before his arrival at Western Kentucky University.  In the second chapter, we talk mostly about his experiences with the cross country and track field programs at WKU, where he ran with and against Olympians and was part of a national runner-up team.CHAPTERS(0:00)  Intro, Influences, & Career in Education(29:10)  WKU Cross Country, Track, & MoreSupport the showWe appreciate you listening to the Tinman Podcast! Spencer Thomson is a guitarist and producer for the alt-rock band Moon Taxi. We come from the same hometown of Bowling Green, KY, and it's been fun to follow his progression as a musician.  Moon Taxi happens to be coming to my current city of Louisville, KY on October 14, so this seemed like a perfect time to re-connect.  Spencer was gracious enough to give us a few minutes for this episode during a brief break from the road.  We discuss his beginnings as a musician, a brief history of the band, touring, and more.  Spencer also has released a solo album, Sonic Dribbles, and has produced, remixed and played guitar for various other musical artists.Support the showWe appreciate you listening to the Tinman Podcast! The Women’s World Cup is winding down, and though American fans may watched their team bow out earlier than usual, the tournament has not been short of compelling and interesting story lines.  One such story line centers around six players from Racing Louisville in the NWSL.  Not only did the club send six players to the World Cup, those players represented six different nations.  When you consider the historic nature of Nigeria and South Africa advancing out of the group stage, you can argue those six players have been as impactful as players from any club across the globe. In this episode, Jeff Greer, the Director of Communications for Racing Louisville, discusses the club’s impact on women’s soccer's biggest event and looks forward to what lies ahead for the remainder of the NWSL season.Support the showWe appreciate you listening to the Tinman Podcast! The Reggae Girlz from Jamaica have surprised the world by advancing to the Round of 16 at the 2023 Women's World Cup.  They shocked France with a draw to open the group stage and did the same to Brazil in the final group game to move on, all after needing help from a Go-Fund-Me page to even travel to the tournament.  The foundation for this success was laid in the buildup to being the first Caribbean nation to qualify for a Women's World Cup in 2019.  That process was led by Hue Menzies.  Hue is a veteran coach accustomed to developing players and programs at all levels of the game.  He is extremely proud not just of the results on the field, but the fact the Jamaican program's success is helping empower young women and impact the culture of his home nation.  Hopefully his insight gives you some context the next time you watch the Reggae Girlz play.Support the showWe appreciate you listening to the Tinman Podcast! Big V joins me from his dispensary and studio for a fun conversation, on a day when he was celebrating the arrival of two new grandkids.  Now operating as a solo artist, he started as a front man of the multi-platinum group Nappy Roots.  We talk a little bit of music, though not as much as I originally planned.   His love for and pride in his family and hometown of Bowling Green, KY are evident.  He also offers a bit of introspection in discussing his appreciation for the opportunities he's had.  There are a couple of interruptions from visitors as Big V enjoys his day, but it just adds to the story. I hope you enjoy listening. https://www.bigvofnappyroots.com/Support the showWe appreciate you listening to the Tinman Podcast! A few years ago, Brian Jones decided to walk away from his job in fund-raising and commit himself full time to his newer found passion of yoga.  He took a leap of faith to follow what he thought would make him happiest.  Today he practices and teaches yoga in Nashville, Tennessee.  Brian has an interesting story to share, and one that I think all of us can appreciate.  He knew what his passion had become, and he wasn't afraid to go where it might take him.Support the showWe appreciate you listening to the Tinman Podcast!
